These are the project
instructions to the artists in 2005. If your group is thinking about a
similar project, these instructions may be useful.
Purpose. Upgrade the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Oncology Infusion Center and Ward
with a group of Cancer- related quilted wall hangings that will provide
education and a pleasing environment for Cancer patients and staff.
Proposal. I propose to lead a group of selected
contemporary quilt artists who will donate an assortment of their wall
hangings for permanent display on the hospital walls as designated by the
hospital. The subject matter of the wall hangings will focus on the
following topics:
1. Plants and other living organisms that were the foundation for chemotherapy treatments
for a variety of cancers; The Sweet Potato, May apple, Pacific Yew, and
Periwinkle to mention only a few. Each wall hanging will have an
accompanying educational literature
2. Wall hangings that suggest a pleasant and peaceful setting.
Landscapes, flowers, or those with touch of humor come to mind
3. Walter Reed Army Medical Center has accepted my proposal subject to the
following guidelines
Guidelines.
1. The wall hangings will be donated and consist of a wide
range of techniques and styles. Quilt artists will have three sizes to
choose from: 20x24, 24x30, 36x48
2. All wall hangings will be available for review by the
Walter Reed Army Medical Center before hanging
3. All wall hangings will be framed to ensure quilt security
and protect against the quilts potentially hosting infectious matter
4. Most participating quilters will come from the metropolitan
D.C. area, but other states will be represented and I anticipate a quilt
from the UK
5. Black Linen will be provided as the fabric to be stretched
on the frame.
6. Quilters will provide a label on back of quilt giving their
name, location, date and donation to Walter Reed Army Medical Center
